It depends. Where do you live, how much do you sweat, and - important - how much stress you are under...I live in a cool climate, and every 2-3 days is usually fine.
Hot water is my favorite modern luxury. I'd shower if it wasn't such a poor environmental choice.
Even if you do step into the shower everyday, there's a good chance you're using too much soap

does that mean one day on, one day off?
If so then I guess it depends, regularly only showering in that interval seems weird to me. I skip a day here and there but not when I have shit to do

No, I occasionally skip a day as well.
The big rule I have is "Will I see another person this day?". That requires a shower 100%.
And I probably also always shower after sports.

My brother doesn't and I've been unable to convince him to do it. He claims because he basically never leaves his home and has AC that he doesn't sweat much and doesn't need to. Also I think something about "uh depression" but honestly that's a reason to shower more since it gives you something to do and feel good about.
If anyone has any good convincing arguments let me know.

We don't live in the same state so I don't have to deal with it often, honestly it's not necessarily the impact on me, I just wish he'd shower for his own benefit. I'm sure anyone who has to work with him or otherwise spends time with him notices.

wtf is the theory behind "too much soap"
Jump in the discussion.

Your hair and skin need some oils to be healthy. Soap works by binding to water and oil molecules so it strips off natural oils as well as bacteria and filth. This can be countered with various lotions and conditioners to prevent drying out, you could also use a shower cap to keep your hair dry and allow it to retain it's natural oils. Generally I'd recommend 2-3 days. You could do it everyday but you'd have to put a little more effort and money to maintain and prevent drying out.

In general a simple one: advertisement is showing you way too big portions of hygiene products used. You will most likely have better results with using 2 smaller portions.
Apart from that your hair & skin have protective layers. The pH of your skin is ~4.7 so slightly acidic. The soap is obviously a base. If you paid attention in chemistry you know what happens - the protective layer of your skin gets damaged. So using soap less often and just cleaning yourself with water (neutral pH) only is beneficial in that regard. Alternatively you can use various skin care products to help your skin.
