It's a modern filesystem that has features like ZFS and BTRFS without the license incompatibility of ZFS and the instability of BTRFS.

What does this mean? Did they make the linux kernel bad or something?

It means they added support for an advanced filesystem with cool features (bcachefs) that people have been anticipating for a while.

Isn't this what btrfs was meant to be?

Yes but it failed. btrfs is very buggy, with a lot of foot guns.

Just one more filesystem bro, just ONE MORE and it'll all be fixed bro, JUST ONE MORE FILESYSTEM!!!

the “bcache” in “bcachefs” comes from the fact it's based off the bcache caching layer that already existed in the filesystem. A lot of fundamentals are already battle tested. It's not quite the maintenance burden that a wholesale new filesystem would be.

Maintainers are also gunshy over another btrfs debacle so Bcachefs had to pass a lot of scrutiny.

Let's see how it matures and how distros start to support it. Me and a friend are excited about this, but currently BTRFS is fine.

What's the difference between this and btrfs? One of your old posts says snapshots will scale better for multi Peta byte snapshots or whatever, but is there a difference that matters for normal usage

Btrfs has a lot of foot guns and generally has a poor track record when it comes to not eating your data.

This ars article comparing it to ZFS is useful, while it's from 2021 the critiques are fundamental to btrfs https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/09/examining-btrfs-linuxs-perpetually-half-finished-filesystem

brtfs sucks at the most critical part of data storage, not destroying it.

I use with it as “ext4++” where it's just a single disk or whatever but there's so many footguns I recommend people get invested in ZFS.
