I don't think people realise how much the search engines getting worse impacts our use of the internet. Refining searches doesn't seem to do much, and it's not just sponsored but also preferred content that gets pushed to the top.

It's harder to both find a specific thing, like your banana woman article, but also to find anything in a more general sense. I don't know if any engine uses boolean search terms anymore, but they also seem so eager to show off what information they have about you if you have a history, while throwing in frequent irrelevant results even more when you use a clean search.

'Let me google that for you' is depreciating as a response as it gets less likely to actually answer a question or lead you to a neutral source not trying to sell you anything.

Youtube is awful for it nowadays. If you search for a popular search term it'll give you some r-slur talking into the camera in that youtube voice about his very important opinion on fruit or whatever (that is, something vaguely related to what you were searching for but not what you actually want). And then the less common the search term, the more the search results will be littered with nonsense.

Here's a test I just did with an unlikely word combination in quotes. It should either give me that one video that contains that text or say 'no results' if that's the case but instead I just get a page of unrelated shit.

Tech companies really want to turn into old cable TV where you spend your time mindlessly flicking from one useless thing to the next while consuming advertisements every 5 minutes. They want to try to entertain you (or rather hold your attention by any means necessary) than actually provide something useful.
