Disclosure: The author is a tab person insofar as he has any idea what he's doing.

This post was updated at 6:33 pm Eastern to fix some line-break issues in the Torvalds blockquote. The irony was duly noted. A better link regarding the Tabs Vs. Spaces debate was also swapped in.

If you've read this far and don't understand what's happening, please allow me, a failed CS minor, to offer a quick explanation: Tabs Versus Spaces will never be truly resolved, codified, or set right by standards, and the energy spent on the issue over time could, if harnessed, likely power one or more small nations.

just use tabs

problem solve

I'm so old I didn't even know this was a debate, so I'm not going to weigh in strongly on which side is correct (it's tabs, though) but if you're trying to commit code to "fix" this in the god darn Linux kernel, it's maybe time to end it all.

I mean obviously tabs are the better choice, but if your entire codebase was in spaces, trying to change that is pretty r-slurred.

I like tab because one button make it move a lot

I don't have strong feelings about this. I've used both. I will say it's jarring looking at the same code on another computer when someone has their tab set to a different value than you do. I see why people would want to try and standardize with spaces, but it's more annoying and easier to frick up. The most anal people use spaces and then get mad when someone fricks up the spacing, even though they insist on an easy to frick up system

Tabs are obviously superior to spaces. You can configure whatever tab width you want and don't have to force it on other people.

The objectively correct answer is spaces with your tab key configured for 4 and only 4 spaces. Anything else makes you a :marseygigaretard:

I have an auto hotkey macro dedicated to putting four spaces every time I press it.

Give me your money and I'll annoy people with it :space: https://i.rdrama.net/images/16965516366194396.webp

Tabs, but two tabs per indent and set the tab size to 1EM.
