Wayland is a protocol like X11 but doesn't have a server like Xorg, the compositor uses Wayland directly.

So you can just exec sway in the console. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/sway#Starting

Usually you'd use a display manager that looks like every login screen ever but the person I responding to was wondering what the startx replacement was.

Good.

All you have to know about X11 is that screen tearing exists by default and you have to jump through hoops to get rid of it.

That's ridiculous. That's like buying a gallon of milk and there's a dead tarantula in it, because you didn't specify that you didn't want a dead tarantula.

"Just install a compositor bro" I shouldn't have to, you troglodyte.

I don't know much about this but I couldn't set 2 different refresh rates and figuring out monitor color profiles was :marseyraging:

And I was reading they was like "just have 2 x servers one for each monitor" our something like wtf does any of this mean

Not to mention the issues with variable refresh rates, full screen, and compositor

At least I'm not the only one who's trog :eagleembrace:

"Just install a compositor bro" I shouldn't have to, you troglodyte.

if you used any of the major DEs, which were the default in any of the major distros, then you had a compositor, and hence no tearing, by default. you had to go out of your way to install a specialized wm with no compositor, with which you had the option of installing a compositor with anyways, in order to reduce tearing.

Of course wayland won. X11 is barely being maintained. Wayland still sucks.

Are any of the tiling wms for Wayland as good as i3 yet? Last time I looked sway was the closest and still wasn't quite there yet.

There are sway and hyprland. I don't like sway because it's written by a massive cute twink.

Sway is a drop in replacement for i3 pretty much, obviously might need to tweak things if you're making xrandar calls or w/e. It runs great on my x200.

Are there replacements for i3bar? Or does that just drop in as well?

I believe it's called swaybar and comes with the sway package.
