What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online?

none, article can end after one sentence

Amazon is 100% riding on brand recognition for the Kindle lol. It's so locked down that you have to email files over to Amazon to load them onto your Kindle.

For my Kobo Libra, I just plug it into my computer via USB, and you can drag files across directly (although I use Calibre to better manage them). No internet access needed, no concerns about special proprietary formats, it just works.

And it also doesn't show me ads.

Jump in the discussion.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

anyways I doubt they'd change the existing products even if that happened. I know Kobo has their own storefront thing (which I've never used) so presumably all Amazon would do is (a) kill any plans to release new versions of the hardware in favor of Kindle and (b) absorb the storefront.

There are numerous ways that you can still legally be locked out of the functionality of any sort of physical device that is running software. Unless you want to use it as a brick.

Valve has pinky promised that if they ever go under, they'll unlock the DRM for the games on their platform so you can continue to play any games you've purchased.

I don't necessarily believe that, but then again, I also don't really care. The only games I can't really pirate are online multiplayer games and if those are based on Steam's matchmaking services than they'd be going down as well.

I think the bigger issue is that if you ever have a dispute with Valve over anything they'll just delete your entire account, which IMO should be illegal, but currently isn't. Like if I issue a chargeback against Amazon for something, they can't come and repo every item I've ever purchased from them.

This possibility should show up indirectly on the contracts they make with publishers and devs, it shouldn't be so hard to see if the option is there or not.

Nothing. You don't own them. Anything else is just an elaborate lie to make you feel like you are not paying for virtual goods with no guaranties for any longevity.

They are ethereal and can disappear any second.

Cohney said there is a strong moral argument – but not a legal one – to explain why people resort to downloading copyright-infringing content via torrent websites.

“This is not to suggest people should go out and do this but it certainly does add a more moral force to the proponents of piracy,” he said.
