Big tech doesn't want you. it doesn't want some bald journoid who spent a summer learning python in some gay summer camp.

The demand for god's chosen neurodivergents (!codecels) will quite literally never go away until we're automated by GPT-12 or whatever.

It's amazing how little work 'business' types do.

Reading emails and writing trello fills up 40% of their days, and HR meetings are the rest 60%.

cope coderboi, there is fluff everywhere, but powerpoints carry more meaning than your software in making money

Do business people really believe this? I'm not one for the "my job is real work" peepee measuring contest, but really?

Addendum: I'm neither a software engineer nor a manager. If you tie your self-worth to how much Goldstein Inc. makes in profit every month, you're an r-slur.

The average programmer is really really bad at their job and yet they are also really arrogant. I deal with a many developers that I have to consistently guide away from some crazy solution to a problem that they think is new and unique, when there's already a simple accepted solution. It doesn't help that PMs are happy to accept shit work because they would rather ship now and then ship it again 6 months when we realize the solution doesn't scale past 5% of users.

My friend I mentioned in my other comment here has some young programmers working for him, and he recently had to deal with one of them unnecessarily restructuring legacy code because he didn't like how it was written. Not that it didn't work exactly as it was supposed to - it just wasn't up to his arbitrary standards of what good code looks like.

I told him that the way you deal with a kid like that is, instead of telling him that he's being an butthole (which he was) you lean into his ridiculous, unearned arrogance by telling him that he's too smart to be working on legacy code, and from now on, you only want him to focus on new development, because otherwise he's wasting his important skills. Apparently this was highly effective.

I have a friend who is in senior management of IT at a large educational institution. Because they're connected to the state government, they would prefer to hire locals, but for programming positions, virtually no locals ever apply. This is starting to change, slowly, because CS graduates can't go get paid $250K for an entry level job at Amazon or wherever at the moment (which they could, if they were top of their class, only a few years ago). But the reality is that every company needs IT staff and there aren't enough :marseytunaktunak: to fill every single role.

This is all a rerun anyway, the exact same thing played out when all the OG internet companies folded in 2001. There's always something else to do in this field if you get laid off.

I've applied to IT work before but they usually get hung on on the whole degree needing part of it when its like neighbor this isn't a programming job. I'm not gonna be writing some ton of c++ and code, I'm just setting up electronics and systems and figuring how to get a cylinder into its proper hole. When that's done then I just make sure the local tard isn't downloading malware. I think understanding the operating systems is enough

Jump in the discussion.

That's a good point. It's also a relatively recent cultural change that it's like that now. When I started out, you definitely didn't need a degree to work in IT, especially a CS degree because 95% of your classes are wasted on an IT job anyway.

If I had a dime for every Gen-X/Millenial code or networking monkey I know who didn't graduate college... tho then again when it comes to getting the high-paying corpo gigs even a humanities degree is better than nothing because HR roasties are nothing but checkbox-ticking midwits
