More Linux kernel list drama. Torvalds says "Enough is enough"

https://lkml.org/lkml/2024/8/24/38

The maintainer for the bcachefs filesystem sends a last-minute patch into the upcoming 6.11 tree, claiming that its an important bug fix and it cannot wait to be merged into 6.12. Linus is not happy because the patch is quite large and it also seems to do more than a simple bugfix, adding risk of breaking things into a release that's almost ready to come out.

Here's a phoronix article giving a bit more explaination: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linus-Torvalds-Bcachefs-Regrets

Some random people in the Phoronix thread fight each other, discussing if it was right for Linus to scold the maintainer like this: https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/software/general-linux-open-source/1487364-linus-torvalds-begins-expressing-regrets-merging-bcachefs/page17

On a related note, you might have also heard about bcachefs this week because the Debian maintainer for the bcachefs-tools dropped the package, citing that its way too difficult to package now due to Rust: https://jonathancarter.org/2024/08/29/orphaning-bcachefs-tools-in-debian/

People try this at work all the time and I just close their pull requests and tell them they need to split it up and not try to push their shit code through cause it's a "bug fix".

Where's the bug tiket? Oh doesn't exist?

So great watching developers flip out.

i like phoronix, don't know why its not more popular. Seems like its dying, buts its the only comprehensive benchmarking software for Linux and actually good hardware news on the site. UGGGGH

Btw, Linus is right on this one, but its his own fault for the backlash. He gave in to the tone police. Now he can't even say anything even mildly confrontational without getting flack.

This is what happens when you don't stand your ground against the mob.

I think he handled this one well.

Honestly his reputation as an butthole is unjustified, he doesn't coddle people but he's just a very direct person. People often point at the "you should be retroactively aborted" email to prove it but if you look at the context he had very good reasons for getting mad and the person was not a random guy

you should be retroactively aborted

what :marseygossip:

Ops, I mixed up 2 incidents. The "retroactively aborted" was Linus joking that programmers that repeatedly make system calls (an expensive operation) to read 1 byte at the time are dumb. He wasn't insulting anyone in particular.

What I actually wanted to refer to was the "Mauro, SHUT THE FRICK UP" email: https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/12/23/75

When I ran an open source project I buried a CoC in some readme no one cared about and whenever grifters would make an issue I'd point them to it and ban them for wasting my time

Phoronix isn't popular because it talks exclusively about Linux, the site's layout hasn't changed in 20 years and the articles and reviews are incredibly bland. It is good, but it's exactly what you expect from a Linux-only site.

What if you made an m file system and called it mfs

why are linux tards so obsesses about new filesystems? Literally noone cares about them , with an ssd all are basically fast enough.

I like the extended filesystem, they extended it four times. Stores all my files and doesn't give me any shit

I've grown accustomed to btrfs's various quality of life features, to the point where I don't really want to go back to ext4.

Reflinks, subvolumes, snapshots, online resizing, compression to a certain extent.

Now watch it betray me and eat my data. That's what I get for defending something on the internet.

Slight necropost but when btrfs fricks up it fricks up bad.

It also has a notable performance hit but like you said the features it has make it worth it. It saved me several times when I first started using OpenSUSE.

But it's also madness for a distribution to vendor exact versions of all dependencies in every binary that we ship. The security story in nixos doesn't look fun: https://fosdem.org/2024/schedule/event/fosdem-2024-1983-remediating-thousands-of-untracked-security-vulnerabilities-in-nixpkgs/

I think that might be worth it to try to raise awareness on how a holistic security process should be supported in cargo.

Yikes, that talk contains some scary content, I didn't realise Nixos doesn't check uploads and that people can just include anything from Flatpacks to binaries from .debs (even non-free) in their Nixos packages! Sounds like they need something like Debian's ftpmaster team to review packages and a stronger packaging policy!

But Nixians I thought Nix was supposed to be so secure!!!

I found this a bit disturbing, but it seems that some Rust people have lots of confidence that if something builds, it will run fine. And at least it did build, and the resulting binaries did work, although I'm personally still not very comfortable or confident about this approach (perhaps that might change as I learn more about Rust).

Most uh Rusticans find it easier to do fizzbuzz in Rust then C++ and shill it based on that

Jump in the discussion.

In what universe is Rust an easier language to do a fizzbuzz in? Especially when in C/C++ you can kind of just wing it and let it segfault itself at the end?

When ur a dumbass and need a compiler to complete code for you

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Well that's honestly odd because I'm a dumbass and while I understand the appeal of rust doing that for you, I can still imagine it's miles easier to frick around with C since it's literally just as complex as you make it.

Wouldn't get a job in it or a hobby writing in it, though. I understand that yeah, you do learn a lot about how memory management actually works in other languages, that comes at the cost of having to literally do everything yourself. Which I assume does wonders for performance, but is actually just aids to work with if you just want to 'make something'.

I really don't know how these weird coding-hobby people just make their own neurodivergent reinventions of the wheel rather than something actually useful.

Rus:!marseytrain:s :throwcrab: and filesystem cute twinks, the two biggest enemies of linux in current year. I've never heard of bcachefs and bcachefs-cowtools before, but sounds like they should both be deleted completely from the kernel and debian, respectively.
