the way that much misogyny in tech operates is by creating a category of women-in-tech that's distinct from technical women or women who have technical skills in the wider sense, and in fact has very little overlap with it.

Pipeline problem. If you have 10000 men and 1000 women entering a field, and their abilities are equally distributed, the top 5% women are as capable as the top 5% of men, then you have 500 top 5% men, and 50 top 5% women. Those are the people that you can promote into non-bullshit positions without ruining the company.

Typical pseudo-solution for this problem to make it easier for women to look good on paper and then force companies to hire/promote based on that look. Now you get 10000 men and 3000 women entering the field, but the top 5% of those women are not even close to as capable as the top 5% women were before the benevolent discrimination.

Result: companies are filled with female duds (on top of other types of diversity duds, and worst: the nepotism duds), their normal coworkers have to cover for them.
