PSA: If your still using VLC Media player, its time to switch to PotPlayer

I was using VLC for probably a decade because back in the day it was the go to player for everything due to wide support of formats and superior performance and quality. In recent years I struggled with the various bugs and performance issues that came with every new update, and outdated glitchy GUI, because I thought its the only game in town. Last week it started stuttering and freezing the image whenever I paused an image and I finally said frick it. After searching for while I came across PotPlayer, which is a stupid name, but associated with a reputable company, and boy was I surprised. The video quality is so much better, zero stuttering, smooth as frick, much more modern and intuitive GUI that I got accustomed to almost immediately. Honestly with the bullshit VLC was giving me I dont care if its proprietary and not open source. Im never going back to VLC. Frick VLC for making me consume my slops on inferior software all these years. You should all Uninstall VLC and install PotPlayer right now.

VLC has had audio stuttering issue upon unpausing for years now. And it's not my PC, the most up-to-date VLC ports to Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows suffer from this. How has this not been fixed yet???

Needless to say, I've switched to MPV (there are a bunch of forks with a VLC style GUI if you need it :) ).

Lot of people have them when I started googling the issues I was having trying to fix them. They may be hardware/driver/setting/system specific. Your probably just lucky you have the right combinations out of the box but theres so many people with the same issues I was having dating back years. Its gotten especially bad with recent updates. Most solutions to problems just tell you to install an older version.

Free streaming sites are bloated and can be unsafe, the quality and format of videos is varied and limited, the players they use often lack many features I need for convenience, for example having a separate window that I can put to "stay on top" while I do something else on background. If I want to skip some parts of a video there may buffering and artifacts and etc. They do not have everything always in their selection. Many reasons to download instead.

not in 2025. i barely see any ads with ublock, and i'd be more worried about dling a file than streaming a video.

vlc 3.0.21 via flathub is buggy af and starts playing oudio out of nowhere while paused/backgrounded, and either freezes video or smears frames during playback,a nd it also doesnt respond to SIGKILL at all. i havent bothered trying the apt repo version because i just use celluloid now, but celluloid has its own bugs with a few videos regarding color but its so infrquent that i dont care enough, and it that happens ill just open the video in firef*x.

When I started looking for new player that was my initial choice, but the package they provided on the official site was unsigned and I couldnt find a signed one so I just skipped it and went with the next recommendation which was PotPlayer. Honestly its so good compared to VLC I just tell the the Stallman in my mind to shut up. I dont have an issue using proprietary software from a trusted company

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Arch GNU/Linux. The packages are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of pacman most of the packages will go over a typical user's head. There's also AUR, which is deftly woven into your system - its personal philosophy draws heavily from Richard Stallman literature, for instance. The true Arch GNU/Linux users understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these packages, to realize that they're not just free software- they say something deep about GNU/Linux. As a consequence people who dislike GNU/Linux truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Stallman's existencial catchphrase "Free software, free society," which itself is a cryptic reference to Torvald's epic Linux kernel. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Stallman's genius unfolds itself on their monitors. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Arch GNU/Linux tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
