It's super oversimplified pop history. I haven't read it so my critique will all be second hand. But it's a book that started with a firm idea of what it wanted to say, did no rigorous study, and claimed it was right about everything.
Most serious history books will start with a theory but will critique their own theory in the text, or will just do a rigorous study and develop themes and ideas not a central hypothesis. To boil down colonialism and the power of the west to "Guns Germs and Steel" is just a huge disservice to the history meant to appeal to morons.

Would you say as a starting point it’d do more harm than good? I’m trying so hard to teach this person close to me something about history good fricking god it’s like they slept through everything but science math and lunch
