He wants to be European. Like you see Russian have victory day on 9 may because the war end declaration was signed on 8 May 23:10 Central European time so that would put Ukraine clock at 00:10 May 9. But Zelenskyy moved the Ukrainian victory day to 8 May to be closer to European
and made 9 May the day of Europe. So he downplayed Ukrainian ww2 achievement just to be cool as western country.
