There are 3 defensive lines in north-dontesk area, the first is the lysychansk-kreminna line, the second is bakhmut-soledar and the third is the slavyansk-kramatorsk.

The first line (already fell) existed to give time for ukraine troops to regroup and to prepare defenses in the second line, this objective was achieved by the ukranians. The second line (bakhmut) is where they make their stand, this line was prepared for a long time for that purpose and losing it is a BIG loss for ukraine, the third line is the weakest of the 3 as it was prepared less since it is a last resort.

If Russia defeats ukrainian army in bakhmut then ukraine will be at a big shortage of men to hold the already weaker slavyansk line, its open ground for Russia basically. They could of withdrawn and saved their men to hold this with better chances but ukraine decided to lose everything here, there is around ~30k men (assuming the brigades are at half strenght) thats not easy to replace.

If bakhmut wasnt important neither Russia or ukraine would waste thousands of men taking it, so dont delude yourself here.

the advantage of germany in Stalingrad was always their airforce, and nothing has been decided yet, not to mention germany barely took any casualties at the start of the battle and only started dying in mass after they were bogged down and later surrounded.
