This morning, the House Intelligence Committee posted this ominous message:

It's a big enough deal that the Gang of 8 is meeting tomorrow: https://x.com/reesejgorman/status/1757817086045229537

Speculators noticed that Russia launched a rocket with a "classified payload" five days ago: https://x.com/ColbyBadhwar/status/1757838088850567215

It leaked pretty quickly that Russia put a nuke in space.

This; it's an anti-satellite system that isn't going to be pointed at earth. They're just gonna use it to blow up satellites if they even use it at all.

Which would still be very bad if they did it, but nothing ever happens.

also wouldn't it be easier to intercept a nuke from space? I don't know what the frick I'm talking about but I feel like it would be. Space lasers are a much bigger concern

Space lasers are a much bigger concern

The one thing I've never seen anyone address with space lasers is the fact polishing exists. Couldn't I just chrome the shit out of my missile and reflect the majority of energy from your laser?

!r-slurs am I right or just one of you?

Probably not going :marseysalmaid: to be very reflective after atmospheric re-entry :marseysheercliff: :marseyburn:

I'm not an authority on this either but there was some early concern that this "unidentified threat" was a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractional_Orbital_Bombardment_System, which would be difficult to detect compared to an ICBM.

ICBMs already spend some of their time "in space."

Space lasers (of the not god's-chosen kind) are a :marseynothingburger: . Theres so much absorption and scattering due to the athmosphere that you dont actually end up with any energy at the target compared to the power you have to put into it. And that leads to the second big issue, waste heat that you have to get rid of but cant in space. Your lazer's just gonna fry itself.

Intercepting a ballistic missle is easier in space than in reentry, but you still need your interceptor in the right place, with enough range, and enough speed to actually get an intercept vector. That gets even more complicated with MIRVs or decoys that seperate from the booster in space, so you actually have half a dozen smaller targrts to shoot at instead of one large.

At first glance I thought that said space BIPOCs and thought "Hmm, I guess that would be a concern." :marseypipe: Spending too much time here lately.
