Even the primary fission charge in a nuke is ackshyuwally a fission-fusion-fission device, aka "boosted fission." It is a thin shell of plutonium filled with either tritium or lithium-6.
The x-rays emitted by the plutonium reaction trigger fusion in the tritium, which then causes more fusion on the inner lining of the plutonium.
Essentially is causes a higher percentage of the same amount of fissile material to undergo fission, with minimal energy release from fusion.
The X-rays from the primary fission charge ignite the secondary fusion charge and start the fusion reaction.
You can keep adding more and more charges if you like.
