Similar negotiations happened during the cold war (between the West and Russia/China) and this likely isn't the first time a backroom deal has been made in this war.

Washington allegedly then contacted Kyiv and asked them not to proceed with the plans.

Neither side wants the proxy war to escalate. If Russia is unable to save face, then it's harder for a peaceful conclusion to be met. Stabilization is probably in everyone's best interest now.

Yeah. The Cold War. When there was no active conflict.

lol

If Russia didn't want to escalate it the war would have ended two years ago. Russia chooses to escalate at every opportunity, US backs off because sleepy is a fricking kitty.

To be clear, I'm talking about expanding the conflict beyond Ukraine.

The US, EU and UK all prefer that they can simply test their weapons and wave some little flags while the war stays over there somewhere, and Russia obviously wants to keep the shooting war out of Russia as much as possible.

Yes the US and EU has shown a lot of restraint, it could be way worse for Russia, but it's already sufficiently a trainwreck they are happy keeping it a stalemate and waiting it out it seems
