The year before, Ukrainians had a very successful offensive. They managed to take back a huge territory.

Seems like Russians learnt the right lessons and Ukrainians believed their own propaganda. Last year the propaganda was all about the big offensive which will kick Russia out of Ukraine.

It's a freaking stalemate. Can everyone at least consider sitting at the table to talk now? Or is diplomacy still out of the question?

IMO, Kiev is making the absolutely worst choice by making its troops suffer losses while trying to create defence lines that could not be completed in time. This can only result in troops being forced to retreat anyway, only after suffering major losses and without fortified positions to fall back to.

Ukrainian morale is broken and the effects are obvious. Zelensky staked everything on Avdiivka, which was an obviously bad idea. Now that Avdiivka has fallen in spectacular fashion, the troops know that victory is out of reach. No one wants to die in vain for a war that is already lost.

If Zelensky had actually listened to his generals, he would have pulled back from Avdiivka months ago and entrenched further back in more defensible positions that weren't already surrounded on three sides by the Russians.

I love the idea of both a) building more defences early and b) retreating early into those positions, defeating the whole point

Ukraine refused to dig In because then it would buy into the stalemate perspective and look bad to the west when it comes to aid.

The shortsightedness of this point of view is coming to roost

maybe they didn't plan for the west to not deliver artillery ammo? Russia had a large advantage in manpower and industry over ukraine. If we stop giving support russian numerical avantage will show up in a lot of places including ability to dig eleaborate trenches

ukraine needs full support including a technological edge to offset russian numbers. That means an air force so that the "glide bombs" in the article are ukrainian and not russian. There is some progress on that recently with already heavy russian losses in su-34 and awacs

Armies collapse when they're out of ammo. There's just no more fighting anymore, and we're unfortunately seeing this with recent Russian advances. Ukraine can't repel Russian attacks just saying patriotic slogans at them. They need shells and bullets, and lots of them.
