There's one philosophical position on this that I've never seen expressed, and that is when you reach a technological level where you can sate all your desires, you just hermit up and stop doing things because you can just alter your mental state. You only do things to alter your mental state and sate desires, why not short circuit it, alter your brain directly, and just not interact with the physical world.
Or in other words, what if aliens are in their gooncaves?

If only 0.1% of all alien species has the desire (and the technology) to expand its Lebensraum indefinitely, such a species will take over all the nearby worlds of the 99.9% goon aliens nearby and keep doing so until the boundary of the volume under its own control touches the boundary of another such species' volume.
And if only 0.0001% of all advanced alien species want to expand, they will still end up controlling the 99.9999% goon alien worlds.
