I went to Starbucks for a coffee yesterday, and gave the cashier my usual name, "Batman". As a 40yo woman with two babies in tow most of the time, I usually get a laugh when I say my name. But this time the cashier said "uh, we're not supposed to take a fake name, actually. I need a real name." I looked at her point black and said "do I need to give you my name to buy a coffee?" And she said "no no no, you can just pick something normal. You know, like Karen." I said "Well, that's obnoxious, but you do what you have to do," and walked away.
I almost complained to the manager but by the time I got my coffee, I saw that she had written "Erin" on my cup and disappeared herself into the back. So.... mindful of the fact that I'd likely be dismissed as "Karen" for complaining, I just left.
I don't like this timeline.

As it should be, giving yourself a dumb name is as good a warning as a face tattoo.
