It's true that you can't get one on your own but it's not because of nonsense like taking care of the kids and such. I'm fairly certain you can't even get a DNA test of yourself

Pretty sure the French official reasoning does involve statements such as,"it would destabilize society." Then you are left to fill in the blanks as to why letting fathers get paternity tests would destabilize society.

It's one of those things where if the man has a reason to be suspicious it's unlikely he's going to stay without further confirmation. Plenty of single moms in France, if they really wanted to keep families together they'd crack down on that instead of banning expensive DNA tests.
