This bill, if it becomes law, would require you to provide proof of citizenship at the polls before you vote--and the name has to match your ID. So if the name on your birth certificate differs from your license, or you don't have a passport with your current government name on it, you won't be able to vote. So anyone who has had a name change would be affected by this.

HOW is this not a NORM!? !burgers

The discourse around voting in the US also confuses me, do you not need to show some sort of ID when voting in the US? Can you just walk in and vote? Can't you do that multiple times then?

Where I live you just walk in and tell them your name and address, then they check you off. They don't require ID as it was deemed a method of "voter suppression" because low income people can't be bothered to keep an up-to-date photo ID.

You can't vote multiple times, but I could technically pretend to be any random person who has an address near the polling station

They changed it in my state, so now you can go to any polling place in the county. The only thing you would need to commit widespread fraud would be a name and address that match, which are publicly available using property tax records.

I'm sure it's not happening, it's (D)ifferent here in Illinois.

You can't vote multiple times,

Unless you know someone who's a poll worker, then you just give them a list of names to check off, they give you a stack of ballots, and off you go.

Right, I just meant with your own name… I could probably walk into my local place with a Covid mask and different clothes 30 times if I wanted to… just need local names and addresses

What exactly would be stopping me from voting for everyone in my neighborhood?

Yup. If you know the names and addresses of people not voting you can just go around and vote a bunch

As it should be. Anytime anyone wants to vote, anyone should be able to vote. Any number of times. It's called "The American way" and that's why I always vote twice.

women change their name when they get married

you have to bring your birth certificate and marriage loicense to the social security office to have your social security updated, and then bring all of that to the DMV to have your driver's loicense printed with your married name

but it does not retroactively go to your birth certificate

meaning that your birth certificate will not match your proof of citizenship

we won't even have to !repealthe19th

Really stupid thread that is relying heavily on people either purposely lying or just being completely fricking r-slurred when it comes to the bill. After a couple of counters it then comes back to this tiresome argument:

The problem is that passports and Enhanced Driver Licenses cost money which is a direct violation of the 24th Amendment (poll tax).

If you change your name, you just have to do it legally instead of using an alias.

In most states, you can change your name legally by doing nothing more than consistently using it. A court order is not required. It's a common-law doctrine. One of the problems with the federal REAL ID Act has been that it doesn't account for this—it means a state may not even be allowed to issue a compliant document in your legal name.

More generally, name matching is an r-slurred way of proving identity. It is normal for people to have multiple names and names that change.

You know for as often as women talk about how we could crush their skulls with our bare hands, they sure seem to forget sometimes that we could crush their skulls with our bare hands.
