Old lore had it so the Chaos Gods (except Slaanesh) were each born due to events in human history, i.e: Nurgle was born during the Black Death or something.
This was retconned in favor of Chaos as a corruption of the Immaterium emerging circa 10,000BC during a war between the Old Ones and their Ork/Eldar servitors vs proto-Necrons led by fully-formed C'tan.
