The cards were waaaay more balanced around the Kaiba arc when summoning and stuff was introduced, like before god cards even (although those didn't really unbalance the field anyway)

It isn't specifically the synchro mechanic I disliked but moreso the cards that were being added just became less cleverly related to every other card as a whole. Idk it might have been different for u but what I noticed was it being more and more of a requirement to play with a type-deck and this basically meant you had to get cards specifically for that deck. (this is good for sales obviously)

Whereas before really the only actual typedeck was the toon world thing but that was really just a novelty since it was giganerfed from what was in the show. Decks were more modular and you could switch out a couple cards and suddenly you had a completely different strategy, but the point is you didn't have to go and switch out every card.

While I'm knee deep in this post here I'm talking about shit like, you have a hurrdurr deck and you have a monster called hurrderp and the effect is some shit like "if you have a hurrdiderp monster in your graveyard pick 2 hurrderpettes from your deck and add them to your hand" then the hurderpettes will have an effect like "if you added this card into your hand because of hurrderp's effect, you can summon this card onto the field immediately" and then it'll be like the condition of your "gigahurrdurr" synchro where you can only synchro summon if you tribute a hurrderpette that was special summoned this turn.

And it was just a bunch of decks with basically that same type of mechanic and I said frick this I quit this gay butt game it's just a money grab.

Pendulums were kind of the last era for me. The mechanic was clearly pushed, but at the very least Konami supported a lot of other archetypes to at least make them more or less viable if you weren't trying to compete with cancers like Qliphorts, PePe, and True Kings running around.

Link era ruined it all though with Master Rule 4 legitimately railroading all decks into playing links put an awful taste in my mouth. Basically any strategy that didn't make early link plays couldn't even be considered rogue viable. And the amount of absurdly pushed links was just a huge joke. I can't count the number of games where I just lost to Firewall dragon that made me say "this game is no longer for me". I've come back a few times since Master Rule 5 walked back a lot of the changes and I can see some of the usefulness in the link monster concept for the consistency it adds to decks, but by that point it was (still is I think?) Firmly in the hand trap era, which just doesn't really appeal to me.

But anyone who says Yugioh died when synchros were introduced is braindead, the game was miles more fun in the Synchro & XYZ eras because the cards being made were across the board more usable. Off the top of my head, it was only TeleDAD in the beginning of the Synchro era, and then the frog OTKs from a few years after, and then the wind-up/shock master locks that were really cancer decks from like 2008-2015.
