Think risk but not on a world map, on a map with 3d terrain with pre chosen armies that the players build. You basically buy super detailed miniatures to represent various units of your army, then place them in a big table with fake buildings, trees etc and follow the rules to fight someone else.
Miniature war gaming (of which 40k is a sunset) actually has a very long history. HG wells invented a very early system called "Little Wars." For a long time it was a bunch of old neurodivergents focused on the Napoleonic wars.
