If people start talking about receiving death threats online, I assume they haven't reported it to the police, who would have told them not to do that, so obviously they aren't that concerned about them

In 99% of cases where people talk about death threats, what they actually mean is someone told them to kill themselves, not that they were threatened by someone who wanted to kill them.
