They tell the story of the space marines as the good guys.
Also neurodivergents can probably get around the hero to root for limitation by just enjoying the cooler looking faction being their guys. So coolness as a replacement for good.
Once everyone is a bad guy who cares about the conflict or death? The world is and will be shit no matter the resolution. The normal response to a grim setting with no hope: . It starts to becomes logical to kill everyone, nuke the entire setting, and restart from ash because the post apocalypse seems preferable.
Yeah, people say they like grimdark, where they really just like the dark. They like the savage, ultraviolent setting but they're faking how excited they are for the nihilism.
>Once everyone is a bad guy who cares
There's a reason that the official warhammer short film last year starring a space marine succeeding against all odds was so popular: people don't actually like nihilistic failure.
It was a really good short film! It kills me that Games Workshop sits on this IP, if you aren't into the tabletop game there are only parades of shitty warhammer games to expose you to the franchise.
I prefer the Imperium in a constant state of civil war. Where imperial governors have inquisitors killed for complaining about his alien subjects and no one notices because communication tames centuries . Where where the Reason for the shitty technology is because the admech are hoarding the good stuff and they secretly have laboratories, robots, ai, and loading mechanisms but you can't have any because you're a stupid meat creature and the omnissiah will devour you along with all the other weak flesh creatures. Where imperial guard regiments are made up of xenos because some bureaucrat thought the form for human worlds was easier to fill out and going against the bureaucracy gets you killed. Where space marine chapters blow up imperial navy ships and rogue traders for kidnapping from worlds under their protection. The imperium should be just another evil for the heroes ro struggle against.
Yeah but the regular human civilians in wh40k are the absolute least interesting characters in the setting (none of them support black lives matter). In a universe of orks, aliens, bug hordes, and 9 foot tall super warriors, @CountChristoff do not care about the average person.
Every time a warhammer novel switches perspective from a space marine to a civilian I completely lose interest in the story. I'm looking at you, Horus Rising, I do not care about the fricking Remembrancers.

!truthnuke "grimdark" enjoyers that say:
are lying to themselves. Every human being is genetically coded to prefer stories with a hero or at least someone they can root for.
If Warhammer 40k was actually as "grimdark" as they pretend it is, nobody would like it.

Even Hitler honestly believed he was the hero of his own Star Wars.

@CountChristoff agree with you about all that except
If not the Imperium, then who are the heroes? Black lives matter?

The Imperium's citizenry. The organization itself is too rotted and stupid to survive. It needs to die so humanity can live.
