Honestly, I think this person is exaggerating about not showering in over a year.
I have severe treatment resistant depression and sometimes I end up going a day or two when I'm not going out because I don't have the energy and doing a task like that has such a high barrier, that I just don't feel like doing but I force myself anyway and I feel like shit when I just end up going a day or two.
Going a year is no excuse. Just take a fricking shower.

It's chronic. It's the kind that has an onset in early childhood. I was suicidal and told my teachers I wanted to kill myself at the age of 7.
There are meds that do help, but it's caused by genetics likely due to issues with norepinephrine.
On a good day, I'm moderately depressed, when seasons change it gets severe. I just kind of have to learn skills to deal with constistent depression and the cognitive effects.
It's primarily treated with stimulants.

If I am going out and interacting with people then yeah but if I'm just sitting around at home I can easily go a week without a shower with no problem. Showering is kind of overrated IMO. I have a friend who used to get laid all the time with attractive women and he would shower like once a week when he wasn't actively going out, I think he would usually only shower if he was about to go meet somebody or it had been like a week since the last time. He didn't stink, either. Some people don't smell as much when they don't shower as others.
With your depression issue, though, I can see that it might be beneficial for you to just make sure that you stick to a routine.
