What are your thoughts on reclaiming slurs?

I am very uncomfortable :marseyhelp: with words :marseyswear: such as p**ner and tr*nnie as I find them dehumanising and humiliating, but I know many trans :marseyhrt: people are happy :marseyreportmaxxer2: to use these words.

If someone calls me a p**ner I just get so angry, because being reduced :marseydiscount: to genitals like this is pretty :marseyglam: gross.

What does everyone :marseynorm: here think? Should :marseynorm: we legitimise them or avoid :marseynope: using them?

I think it's valid for trans people to reclaim slurs that have been used against us for centuries. Doing this allows for a form a self ownership. We can transform the words that once inflicted pain and suffering on our oppressed people and turn them into words of kinship and endearment. However in today's society, we will have friends and members of our community that aren't yet comfortable with these terms, and we should minimize our usage around them to respect their feeling and ensure they feel welcomed into our spaces. Our scars of oppression are still fresh and will take time to heal, but we will make it!
