I'd bet this is almost all down to people using different metaphors to describe the same thing, and none of the metaphors being a great fit for what's going on. Cue endless arguing because for one person what their brain does when they think of a cat is something they round up to "seeing" a cat, while another person experiencing it would round that down to not being able to see a cat when think of one because it's not the same as looking at a live cat.
