Problem: the face of the modern day train movement is a failure in both messaging and substance. Most people can't relate to trains at all and their political platform makes no sense to them. Their most prominent figures are inscrutable, to say the least.
However, even those of us with slight chud leanings are aware there are trains who just want to lead their lives without being a nuisance to the general public, who won't put you in a headlock for misgendering them, and are currently the victims of political crossfire.
Plan of action: trains need an engaging, non sexual, NON POLITICAL tv series where they're interacting with normal people much like the makeover show Queer Eye For the Straight Guy, which—along with the sitcom Will & Grace—was a groundbreaking show for its time. Homosexual men have intuitively understood what kind of media presence would gain them mainstream acceptance: be nonpolitical, be attractive, be non threatening, be funny.
Why haven't transpeople pursued the same?
Trains need a popular normie show where they don't browbeat people about gender ideology. Where they don't bring up the issues of bathrooms, sports, or children. Where they don't cry about transphobia. And OF VITAL IMPORTANCE: where they cast only non threatening, charismatic, and attractive trains.

What sort of struggles could trains help with specifically? Not quite sure, but It might be something like helping normies blend into an unfamiliar situation or territory. This went on until well into the '60s and isn't completely gone in the '70s. Something they wont teach you in school: The majority of Americans didn't want segregation even at the beginning of this process. As for the ones who wanted it, this was mostly a regional thing in the South and among certain populations in big cities.
After McCarthy got destroyed by the Army's lawyers toward the end of the 1950s, this was pretty much over. The actual real commies had been rounded up in the late 1940s-early 1950s. By the time of the McCarthy hearings people were starting to get that we've caught them all and this is a witch hunt now. Some of this continued but faded out in early 1960s. After that commies were not considered that much of a threat because they were such fricking squares. We could see communism in action in both Russia and China and it involved wearing bad clothes, living in squalor in a crowded apartment building, not listening to non-socialist music, not seeing art that didn't follow Socialist Realism. Kids who wanted to rebel against their parents saw this and realized that the Soviet Union is like your parents but 10 times worse. Nobody took communism seriously.
3. Christian fundies (90s to late early 2000s)
That's an entirely different set of people. The ones who hated the commies most turned into the fundies.
As for their importance: They were annoying but ordinary people didn't really pay much attention. They would write books and the atheists would write books. This didn't get into personal animosity though. I had a fundie gf, I even went to her church. Most of my friends were pretty left-wing but none ever had a problem with her over politics. Unironically, if somebody said they didn't like her because of politics everyone would have wondered if they were mentally ill or something.
I dunno about the rest of the country but we've got a substantial Iranian population here. Some people were peepees to them occasionally. That's it.

I think transgender acceptance is mostly floundering so far because it doesn't feel "bottom up"
The aids crisis and then the slow wave of coming outs in the 90s and 00s made people realize that their sister, cousin, uncle, children etc were gay. The TV shows you mention helped with this.
There are fewer trans people statistically and they "all showed up" since like, 2015
Five to nine years is not a lot of time to remake gender as a social institution.
I think abandonning transmedicalism also hurt trans optics; IME boomers feel on average that "oh I have a mental illness and I'm trying to cope about having the wrong body" is more credible than "maleness and femaleness are social constructs"

Interesting idea. I think a major hurdle is that men feel instinctively, literally threatened by the thought of being gay. A more attractive train may be more threatening to them. Most straight men don't like drag queens either, and RuPaul's Drag Race already exists.
For the general cause, I think letting FtMs be the "face" of trans people would be better. They're not viscerally threatening to anybody, and the idea of trying to become a better man is appealing to most men. Focus on fitness, fashion, handiness, and self improvement content. Maybe the trans men could be helping unfashionable or out of shape cis men focus on their goals, but I think it'd be better if they were just working together. Part of what raises hackles about gays is when they're presented as some kind of magical negro sexuality. Women seem to like this, but men really don't, especially if (in this case) the threat is that a woman might be a better man than you. So instead let cis and trans men bond over their shared goal of becoming manlier. This would also be generally man-positive content in a time when liberal media culture is dumping on men.
As for MtFs specifically, I think the goal should actually be to desexualize them. Don't pick hot ones over ugly ones. Just pick ones who look a little "mannish" but basically just want to blend in and live their lives, and dress them in neutral clothing. Then focus on some completely different aspect of their lives. Unfortunately MtFs get hit with the eunuch/male feminist dichotomy, so it's in their interest for the public to see them as "eunuch" (not literally asexual, just someone whose sexuality is rarely considered by people who don't know them).

At the heart of the issue is that you're being forced to engage in someone's sexuality that you didn't consent to. Even if it's that only some trans people are AGPs, that's still enough that you'll have one of those non-consent experiences before too long. And there's not really any way to distinguish whether someone is getting off on it or not so even in the best case scenario (that they're all not just engaging in a fetish and some are 'legit') you'll always be a bit paranoid and a bit disgusted.
It's not the same as gay men since gay men don't (usually) get off by being visibly seen as gay, and so by someone telling you that he's gay, you're not engaging sexually with him.
