Jesus himself didn't really say he was inventing a new religion, he just claimed to be the Jewish Messiah (which multiple people have done throughout history).
He came in at a time when the Jews were already kinda scattered in various cultures (mainly Greek) so the concept of ethno-cultural "Jewishness" no longer being a requirement to practice the religion appealed to a lot of Jews.
