I guess "career" was a bad choice of a word. His networking in Earthbound romhack and Homestuck communities undeniably played a role in his success. I meant to say that the primary inspiration for the events and characters in his games came from fever dreams, which is still quite impressive. I am sure he heavily embellishes their actual importance, but every artist needs a good myth for their work process.

I think the FNAF guy did it best. He struck gold with the first game then just quintupled down on making as many as he could with a flimsy and obscure plot to drive youtube clickbait for more free marketing.
