Which game was more revolutionary Half Life 1 or 2?

I feel like half life 2 was more groundbreaking tbh

Half Life 1. It set the standard for a new subset of FPS games. HL2 took that template and refined it.

yeah, before half life the peak of storytelling in a FPS was what, Duke Nukem 3D?

Lmao

I was gonna argue but after thinking about it your not wrong.

Marathon and System Shock were story driven but it was all text based loredumps iirc

Can't honestly answer that question. Half-Life revolutionised FPS storytelling but 2 was a literal odyssey. IMO, the only overlong game that doesn't outstay its welcome.

HalfLife 2 was several short games with different mechanics jammed into one.

HL2 is comically overrated compared to HL1, at the end of the day it’s just a polished, gimmicky sequel that stands on the shoulders of a giant that actually broke ground.

You can tell the average age of dramatards by whether or not they suck off HL2 because they played it when they were 15.

If you include Steam as a platform existing, hl2. Otherwise I believe hl1 was more revolutionary.

Longpost incoming

The first HL is imo the absolute apex of corridor shooters. There are no cutscenes, no lore drops, everything is done in game. It's an incredibly well designed game that is still playable although the original physics engine and lack of cover mechanics makes it feel dated. The game felt gigantic at the time, the universe was original and interesting. Plus it spawned Team Fortress and Counterstrike along with a BUNCH of other great mods. Even the vanilla multiplayer was great.

When HL2 came out I didn't like it. Cutscenes, hamfisted lore and a much more boring world. The game felt like a tech demo for the physics engine and the gravity gun gimmick was boring tbh. Ravenholm is completely out of place in the HL universe imo. I played it again years later and got more into it, but it's still not great. The best thing to come out of it was that mod where you play as a weird zombine thing for an AI named Minerva.

TLDR: HL1

Video games can not. Revolutionize anything because they aren't real
