Weekly ‘What Are You Playing’ thread #14

Watching the Dota Major, big Shopify fan :marseyxd: Will RTZ finally win anything? Doubtful.

Anyways, maybe I’ll go autismmode on Quantum Break and beat it in one weekend, probably not though. Talk about the Geoff Keighly E3 replacement seems to have started, but I doubt it’s going tk be that big compared to anything else put on directly by a publisher.

Devotion, some Taiwanese Chinese walking-sim, horror game. It's okay, but nothing that special and mostly notable because it was removed from Steam and GOG after the CCP got angry at the devs.

I found the scene where you have to run away from your wife unintentionally funny.

I've been playing some Diablo 2 Javazon recently. It was going really well, until I got to Heck Act 3 and now everything is lighting immune, and all the fun is gone. Got a Zod rune from Sarina though.

I'm still playing Cosmoteer. The novelty of cutting ships in half with giant lasers still hasn't worn off. I've played an embarrassingly long time now, even though when you boil it down the content is pretty slight.

Also I finished Spyro 2! I feel like it lost a bit of steam towards the end, but considering that originally they churned out all three games in the space of 2 years, what can you expect? I've now started the third one which, although I distinctly remember playing for hours when it originally released, I can remember basically nothing about.

On top of all that, a little more Assetto Corsa. I've been playing around with this totally dope Opel Calibra DTM car which pairs surprisingly well with modern GT3 cars.

I'm looking forward to playing the conversion of Age of Empires 1 in the Age of Empires 2 engine when it releases in a couple of weeks.

Has anybody played Stranded: Alien Dawn? It looks kinda like RimWorld meets The Sims and is made by the people who developed the older Tropico games so I might give that a shot when I get the chance.

I also replayed spyro recently. 3 has even more gimicky sections that I didn't enjoy very much than 2

I suppose that makes sense considering the rate at which they churned these games out and the need to find things to differentiate them from their very recent predecessors. Perhaps there's a reason why I don't remember 2 and 3 so much while the first game is burned into my memory!

Did you play the Reignited editions or the PSX originals btw?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I got the Reignited versions, for reply because they were on sale. They were fine and it was interesting thinking how much game design has developed since the ps1 era, but wow did they develop into better.

I got some nostaliga tho

Yes, I also picked up the Reignited Trilogy in a sale! Originally I had intended to play through the PSX versions, but double the frame rate and right stick camera controls are too good to ignore.

As for the games themselves, it's difficult to make a judgement on them that's decoupled from my nostalgia. But I can certainly see why I liked them so much back in the day!

Honkai Star rail. Really wasn’t expecting to like it at all; thought I’d download it, play the first mission, then never touch it again but I’m enjoying it so far. Never realized how absolutely tedious the exploration in Genshin is post Liyue until I played this and got pretty much all the rewards in like an hour of running around.

The writing is decent and manages to get a chuckle out of me every now and then. I’m even reading the optional lore stuff because it’s usually mildly entertaining. Also the MC has a personality which is nice and I think wacking the shit out of everything with a bat is fun.

Too busy irl to play anything, but I'd snagged RDR2 in the recent steam sale and can't wait to play it once I get some time off in a week or two

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Ditto, it was a good sale.

It has the same issues RDR1 had -- convoluted controls and you'll spend a lot of time googling "how do I [...]" because the game won't mention that mechanic for another 5 hours.

Or in typical rockstar fashion, "your character is cold. Put warmer clothes on" prompts before the game even allows you to change clothing.

Context-sensitive controls are at their worst here. Press triangle to mount your horse but whoops, you were just a little closer to that guy so you punch him instead. Hold RB to examine this graffiti, but someone walked behind you during the examination so RB became "chokehold"

Fan-made game distantly related to Total Annihilation

Never been an RTS guy but this game is pretty fun. Main draw is the huge 8v8 battles with thousands of units active at once. A very legitimate strategy is building as many cheap units as you can to lag out your opponents while you win the game.

It's also not very APM intensive which is nice for senior g*mers.

I’ve been playing Amazing Cultivation Simulator. It’s a janky, rimworld-esque colony sim with a setting based on chinese Wuxia novels. The game is ridiculous, and most of its systems are probably poorly considered, but it’s a game where you make big number get even bigger, so it makes my brain chemicals tingle.

Somehow started Elden Ring again, despite having been very critical of it. From games are hard for me to rate conventionally. The general vibe I get from them is that they're either the worst 10/10 games ever made, or the greatest 6/10 games. Usually lots of bad elements that are overcome by a great sense of danger, exploration, challenge, etc. that few other games share.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I think From gets a lot of credit for making difficult games in a genre that’s known for handholding. Individually, they’re probably still good games, but they benefit a lot from the novelty factor.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

If by novelty you mean replayability, then yeah (I know that's not what you meant :marseywink:). I've always been impressed by the build variety in the Soulsborne games, even different weapons within the same "build" archetype play completely differently and are worth trying. The build variety in Elden Ring is absurd, but the game is so darn long that you can't realistically replay it 10 times without being severely neurodivergent :marseyautism:. I guess the way From dealt with that in ER is by giving you a crapload of the respec item so you could theoretically just respec 10 times in 1 playthrough. Idk, I think From games are cool :marseyexcited: Bloodborne was my 1st From game, it literally reignited my interest in gaming :marseybloodborne:

Jump in the discussion.

DS1 was released 10 years ago neighbor, the novelty factor is long gone.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

From's formula may not be new anymore, but the novelty factor is still there because they're decidedly different from the average single player RPG. At this point, their formula might feel played out to their more dedicated fans, but to the average g*mer who's played maybe a couple of their titles along with about 800 generic Ubisoft RPGs, it's still going to feel fairly fresh. A whole subgenre of 'soulslike' games has cropped up around Fromsoft's uniqueness, and I would say that just goes to show the value and 'novelty' people find in their difference from the norm.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Thanks for the input, but I think you're wrong. Fromsoft's games are still unique and fresh, and the fact that a whole subgenre has cropped up around them just goes to show how much people appreciate their difference from the norm.

One of the better titles of the RE series; a decent balance between the intense item-management of the old titles before they started going too action-oriented with 5 and 6 :marseylove:

I will say the best installment in the series is the Resident Evil remake on the GameCube (I will :marseypunching: anyone on this, come at me.) Please play this one sometime in your life it you want the :marseyjustright: RE experience.

its ok g*mer. any tips? I sold the starting pistol for the Punisher, was that a mistake?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The Punisher is unremarkable in both the original and the remake. The firing power is horrible, and the “penetration power” doesn’t really come in handy except in very edge cases (just use the shotgun on the wooden shields ffs :marseybeanannoyed:).

The one I personally use (as soon as I can get my hands on it) is the Matilda; decently balanced firing power with the fastest rate of fire of the available handguns. To be fair though, my handgun is my secondary weapon in RE since I like to blow enemies away like I’m playing DooM :marseyshooting:

I bought and played the entire series from Dark Forces to Jedi Academy during the lockdown. They're all really fun, even though the writing is somewhat trash in many places.

JA > DF > JO > DF2 would be ranking of the four.

Oh yeah the story, at least in DF2, isn't any good. I just got to the part where Kyle murders his girlfriend for literally no reason whatsoever.

Edit: did you play the expansion, The Mysteries of the Sith?
