I will never understand how people can enjoy playing video games with a controller

Okay, fair enough if you're playing something like Persona, a turn based game, it really makes no difference, you could play that kind of game on your phone. But real time games where you have to manipulate the camera with analog sticks? How the heck can you game like that? I feel like I'm being collectively gaslit whenever I talk about a console port like Monster Hunter or Soulsbornekiro Ring games with friends and they tell me I'm insane for using mouse and keyboard and should use a controller instead. It's like if people recommended gaming on a laptop with a touchpad. What's wrong with you all?

Racing games are infinitely better with a controller than a keyboard, and I'm not enough of a sperg to get a wheel.

I've been considering one after learning how well the skills transfer to real life. Plenty of stories about sim experience kicking in and saving the car on icy days. And maybe I could learn to drift

A wheel will not make you a better driver, even the very best of racing games like Gran Turismo, Forza, or even specialized simulators like beam(.)ng drive still lack physics that translate to real life. If you live in a small place, it'll clutter your house and doesn't stack nice. If you have the room though, makes the games a lot more fun. Get a flight stick and DDR pad, too.

Everything I've seen says the opposite, which is surprising. Professionals genuinely do use these games to train both for racing and drifting. But I'm open to being disappointed. DDR's not a bad thought too.

DDR got me laid so much in highschool, was like a cheat code. Get fit, hang out with arcade girls, smoke weed behind the mall. Man those were the good ol days. Now if I step up on the platform at the local round 1, mothers just usher their children away and my wife suddenly has something important to look at on her phone. :marseyboomer:

(Still fit tho)

K&M only rarely works and you're a stupid neurodivergent if you think otherwise. Your mother is also a whore.

It depends on what you're playing. Factorio, baldur's gate, Counter-Strike? Yeah, definitely mouse and keyboard.

But The souls games, platformers, party games etc. definitely better with a controller. Why can't you just use both? If we're really going to split hairs you should also have an arcade stick for playing retro arcade games, shmups and fighting games.

Controllers are pretty nice for any kind of third-person game, really. I wouldn't play an FPS with one though, let alone any strategy/simulation games made for PC.

I never had a modernish console (I used to own a Game Gear back in the day) in my life so trying to play games using analog sticks feels alien. I don't play any FromSlopware games so I don't really feel the need to change that.

My hands are pretty screwed up, so I find gamepads more comfortable for most things.

They're not for every game, but soulslikes are especially what I want to play with a controller. When you count the d-pad and sticks, Elden Ring has sixteen goddarn buttons. Some of those can be mapped to mouse buttons but it's still too much to keep track of and reliably press on a keyboard.

How the heck can you game like that?

Poorly.

They compensate by adding a ton of really strong auto-aim features to play the game for you because the controllers are so utterly useless for stuff like FPS's.

I'd argue though that controllers are probably better for certain genres like platformers where the 8-direction movement you get from WASD just isn't as good as full range of free motion from a joystick.
