I remember hearing about it months ago as a novel "pokemon with guns" title. There was some general "huh, neat" feedback from the public, but no hyped advertising, so I'm at a loss for how this exploded.

They gave out streamer keys which generated a lot of hype over the past week because the game turned out to be pretty good. Combine that with the $30 price tag, and Nintendo fumbling pokemon games for like a decade, and you get this.

It's the UE crafting asset, weapons asset and fantasy graphics pack slapped together, with 3d pokemon added on top.

Because it's a genuinely fun well optimized game in a sea of literal garbage. Most pokemon clones are either mid, trash or decent but frick it up somehow. This is basically breath of the wild pokemon ark survival with guns that runs at 200fps on a decent gpu. Not to mention you can enslave people, actually ride the fricking pokemon and use them, hybrid breed them, build bases, craft, give a monkey a machine gun. It's just wacky as frick.

I'm 34, so I was right in Pokemon's target market when it came to the United States. The main series is painfully formulaic and Game Freak really needs to figure out an art style for backgrounds and scenery, but I still feel like I get something out of playing Pokemon every few years. I can't say the same for Palworld.
Palworld is just as derivative as Pokemon is, just relative to the survival crafting genre.
