One of the best games of the last decade (with one of the more disappointing sequels of this decade) got its sequel half-announced yesterday, with the publisher stating it will be a "multiplayer-focused live-service game." Holy yikes, for a game that had an expansion-turned-offshoot that sucked in part due to it removing the sense of being alone exploring an alien world, this is awful news, right? Twitter and the game's subreddit agree, because that's the correct take.
A lot of g*mer seethe here, but by and large can be summed up by this pic
Subreddit wasn't have much fun either. I think they deleted a lot of the posts after the devs Corrected the Record™️, so a little hard to find threads but there's still a few up. There is a little coping, too, but it seems most people are unsurprised that the devs continue to misunderstand why their game was good in the first place.
Shout out to this based chad setting coping subnutters right.
Developer: We're making our next game use a shitty model that prioritizes money over fun and engaging content.
Sane people: We're not going to buy your game
Other people: Come on guys, just because every other GAAS game is terrible doesn't mean that this one will be.
Major "communism will work THIS time" vibes.
Finally, the devs speak out and clarify that nooo child, the game will not have a battlepass, it will simply have updates over time :^). They even go as far as to comment and lock threads that were pooping on the publisher statement.
Correct take from random dude (option 1 is probably most correct, with a bit of option 2).
No one has ever used that definition of GaaS until now. GaaS as a term comes from SaaS, which is built entirely around recurring revenue and subscriptions. Why would they use that to represent just doing typical patches and updates if there weren't ideas for recurring revenue? There are three possibilities in my mind:
1 The investor relations team used GaaS because it's popular right now and makes investors happy, but they aren't actually implementing any GaaS aspects
2 The playerbase is being duped
3 They were planning to go GaaS and aren't now because we all freaked out
Sadly, it seems most people take this to assume everything is copacetic and in fact we should all pretend Below Zero wasn't one of the most bland games of 2021, as seen in the [quote tweets of the IGN correction post.] (https://x.com/IGN/status/1755674941830152302/retweets/with_comments)
Not really that dramatic after the fact, but I guess it's nice the game got announced, sort of.

Interesting how outer wilds has such diehard fans. One of my friends has it as his favorite game of all time, i dont think its even top 10 in the past five years.
Good for sure, but for some people it just hit some itch

I mean if you don't like it you don't like it, but it's executed nearly flawlessly and it exemplifies its genre. If you like the sort of game that it is, there's nothing better.

Thats fair, i think its too just too niche to really be widely popular. Zealots for it will miss more than they hit recommending it with such praise without knowing the other persons taste

the best of the best is never going to have mass appeal. Most people are to retarted too appreciate the subtle nuances of high quality media. All of the top most popular games/movies/books/etc are mediocre soyslop.

It's vidya. Even the best of the best can't compete with any other medium on the basis of artistic value.
Interesting art with broad appeal is the absolute peak. Niche art and popular slop aren't called the greatest ever in any other medium because there's art in those mediums that is compelling to basically everyone.

It ends with some emotionally manipulative guitar twang music, you're just the g*mer version of those people who feel super emotional when a crappy tv show ends with a rising emotional score and the characters looking back meaningfully at each other

Yeah, I liked the game quite a bit, but my least favorite part was the ending. The puzzle solving and figuring out clues along the way was much more interesting.

I played it for like two hours and moved on
The loop is just a frustrating mechanic that is clearly there to extend how long it takes to beat the game and the game itself was just not fun to play.
I'm letting people enjoy things with this one but it's definitely niche and it's annoying how it's fans act like everyone who doesn't enjoy it must just be too dumb because smart people all spend their time playing tedious puzzle games. I like Disco Elysium but if I ever recommend it I'm explaining all things about it that make it niche instead of just "you're literally r-slurred if you think this isn't worth your time"

@PeepeeButtKiss just think u should give it another try. @PeepeeButtKiss stopped playing as well out of frustration and only ever gave it another shot months later and loved it. Disco Elysium is also good and if someone doesn't like it it's probably because they are r-slurred. @PeepeeButtKiss tried too tell a friend about it and he said it sounded like a "gay dance game." @PeepeeButtKiss suppose because the word Disco was involved

Hmm video games, due to their interactivity, can create reactions in their audience that other mediums can't really do. However this potential is often squandered by trying to ape other mediums instead of being confident in the strenghts of interactivity

Doesnt have to be. Elden ring was loved by normies and i think its the pinnacle of souls design, my personal top game of all time
A truly great game will have wide appeal, and drag people that normally dont play that genre over to it.

Yeah its this, the undertale-style way the fans push it is the biggest thing against it because you will just turn it on, see a kind of janky mid indie game, and wonder what the frick they were creaming their pants over

I usually tell people to try it, that they might bounce off it but that if they like it they'll really like it.
It might have been tainted retroactively by so many othertimeloop games coming out all at once

I will say it's the best game in the genre of those really shitty flash games where you have to agonisingly try and guide a spaceship onto a platform without it crashing. Compared to games anyone wants to play though it's not even top 100

I think there's the question of whether video games are art
I do not think video games are art
But I don't think it's impossible for a video game to be art, I just think it hasn't been done yet, and I do not expect to live to see it
But Outer Wilds is significantly closer - in this aspect it shines, while overall it's "good for sure"

I think most people just dont give a shit about artistry. Movies are art, most movies have dogshit to say and no one notices good cinematography. Are people really engaging with movies as an artform? Or course not
Now the same applies to games. Games are absolutely art, but the average g*mer, even a hardcore g*mer, is not engaging with the artistry. Outer wilds is closer to traditional art, sure. I dont think thats what games as an artform excel at

The Talos Principle is art, in several aspects.
Also, "Spider and Web" is art specifically as an interactive fiction game, that is, it does a thing that's impossible in any other medium: https://eblong.com/zarf/zweb/tangle

I think that's it, it's my personal favorite game. The art, music and gameplay all contribute to the story which I really like. I think it's a game that only works well for some people; all my friends bounced off it.
