Remember sitting in the back of the minivan using one of these on the return trip home from your grandparents house? :marseyboomer:

Those thinks absolutely murdered AA batteries. The SP was such a godsend for roadtrips as the backlight wasn't abusive on batteries.

Your dad didn't love you enough to build a power adapter for your portable console powered from the 12V lighter socket. I used to own a GameGear that would absolutely slurp down its 6 AAs, but my dad made a 12 to 9V adapter for it with a linear voltage regulator and a long cord, so I could game in the back with no worries.

The gamegear was so fricking fetch holy shit. Stomping the shit out of Shawn Michaels on WWF RAW and constantly dying on the first level in that ridiculously hard sonic game every weekend on the way back from the grandparents place was a formative experience.

My dad did make one, but there were three of us. The poor GM battery couldn't handle all that.

Car alternator systems can supply at least 1KW of power, more since I assume your dad owned some kind of 'Murican landbarge. The 30W at most 3 consoles used were peanuts.

Didn't the sp have a front light?

Upgrading from the color seemed like I was living in the future, and then I got a ds with the backlight

There were backlit SPs exclusive to North America which came out late in the SP's life cycle. Although I think most people just bought the DS at that point.

I have a backlit SP still, played Legacy of Goku 2 and Buu's fury on it somewhat recently (maybe a year ago). The only good DBZ games outside of the budokai series

Yes. Could never find an angle where you didn't see its own reflection

Lol those things drained the frick out of the batteries. The backlight in the SP was the greatest development in handheld gaming ever

I mailed my GBA to some rando on the internet to install a backlight for like $25.

Yeah I had one. Turquoise Green GBC playing Pokémon Gold with the lights shut off in my room at 11 PM on a school night.

I had the transparent purple one that matched my transparent purple gameboy. Clear plastic showing off the internals of a device were so cool, why did they stop doing that?

Because it was everywhere, stopped being novel and started to look cheap/gimmicky. Neutral greys/silver/black were less distracting, Apple added high quality white to the line-up later.

This was the pinnacle of human engineering and it's all been downhill from there :marseydepressed:
