And writing is briliant on multiple level. At first world is magical and wonderus. Then you realise you get mostly second hand accounts of events. And you arent sure if villager really saw elf or not. You start to doubt if gods really did anything or not. But world is magical and its everywhere. But you dont know how much and what is magic and what is just ramblings of crazy person.

Yeah, it really gives you the feeling of living in ancient times where people tell you all kinds of weird stories and you have to figure out which ones are true. Like it turned out that pygmies were real but the people with their faces in their chests weren't.

I'm not even sure I'd count Visas (or the Handmaiden for that matter) as a romance. She "falls in love" with the Exile in a very abstract manner and nothing physical ever happens. Instead of a s*x scene you just meditate together. There's a stronger argument for Kreia being a romance plot.

I've played many RPGs of all different
types and the only "romances" that I've found 
even the slightest bit compelling are those that don't involve the player 
character 
at all, or those that end with the death 
of the player 
character's love interest within the first 
hour of the game. It's gotten worse over time as modern 
party 
dialogue mostly consists of you and your companions discussing your respective trauma and giving each other free therapy.

It really damaged Mass Effect. When it started building up a fan base of women who want to frick aliens, they leaned more and more into that. By ME3 it already had basically turned into an alien-fricking simulator.
