I haven't played the first two since I was a kid and I wanted to see how they hold up. I tried starting with Warcraft but it's completely unplayable. Which is kind of sad because I think with just three tweaks it would still be incredibly dated but at least playable. It needs:
1. Right click to move, attack, etc - By far the most painful omission. Having to hit a hot key every single time to just move around is so painful.
2. Bulk select units - You can only group up to four units at a time which is pretty bad but the worst part is you have to shift click them all individually.
3. Unit group hotkeys - The lack of these is especially egregious given the above. Every single time you want to issue orders to more than one unit you have to shift click them all.
After giving up a few missions in I moved on to Warcraft II which is a much smoother experience. It has some dated designs (weak mission design overall, needing to hunt down every last fricking enemy building to complete the mission) but it's still completely playable and fun. I'm awful at RTS games so it's possible I'll hit a point where the missions are too hard and I move on but so far it's been smooth.
I plan to run through Warcraft III as well. I bought Reforged on sale, I know it had a rough launch but it seems okish now and I think it will be worth it just to play at a normal resolution.

The "difficult" missions really just boil down to efficiency. As alliance, get paladins and heal your units regularly (kinda a pain since you have to micromanage it). I know this sounds stupid but if you just stop your units from dying you'll eventually win. Even the powerful AI has limited resources available.
In general, if you can stop the AI from using a gold mine and use it for yourself, you've basically won that mission. Since it all boils down to resources really.

Game unironically looks better than the remake
Yes the remake has more polygons, but that's it. the game's graphics were remade by indians earning $1/hour, having an actual art direction is much better than simply stuffing your butthole full of polygons
you want proof of this? they added female DKs to the game (I think female DHs too) and they had to make a low-poly model, just look at that and see how it stands out from the original low poly models

You can use the original graphics w/ the remake. In fact that's the only way I'm "allowed" to play - I never bought the remake but had the original tied to my bnet account, so I can install and play WC3R, but the config toggle to select the new graphics is greyed out unless I pay $30. Mechanically everything is identical.

I don't know how much of a purist you are, but someone remade the WC3 campaign in the Starcraft 2 engine. It comes with all of SC2's features like infinite unit select, a select all army key, and wayyyyy better pathing.
My favourite part is the ability to switch off upkeep. I remember having extreme autism as a child
and never going into upkeep, and if I had to, I would stop all my workers from mining to avoid wasting resources

What makes me give up with old rts games is the pathfinding. Trying to corral dragoons up a ramp in StarCraft is painful
I played the updated warcraft 3 not too long ago. I should pick it up again soon... I dropped off like halfway through the night elf campaign because the night elves are almost impossibly lame.

I replayed it a year or two back. It's really not bad. There's a "War2Combat" (not sure if that's what
@peepeehands is playing) which is basically a fan update. Graphics are obviously the same but the game runs well on modern Windows and all the original campaigns (base game + expansion) are there. They even have some kind of ladder/online play with custom servers but I can't imagine ever wanting to play WC2 online again.

I'm pretty sure there are mods for the WCs to give them some modern convenience features, like right click for move/attack, grouping, etc.
Similarly, yesterday I got hit with a nostalgia wave for the original Starcraft and planned on playing some today.
