Is China poised to becoming a global cultural powerhouse? Should I bother learning Chinese?

Ignore :marseyerasure: the other r-slurs, yeah probably on the level of or surpassing Japan :marseycodegeass: if they continue to open themselves to the world.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I wanted to learn another language so euros can't dab on me for being monolingual and I have been learning Spanish because I think latinx are the hottest women (and it's the most useful 2nd language as an American). But Spanish has like no modern cultural works outside of music which I don't care about. My 2nd choice was Chinese because I figure they are the 2nd biggest world power and it would be advantageous to know. But I decided the US was probably going to still dominate and they are so walled off that knowing Chinese offers far less than it seems.

Learn :marseybowing: Japanese, if the US burns :marseyschizo: down you can make use of that and move to Japan. Everything is pretty :marseyroan: cheap :marseydiscount: there  and the people are pleasant :marseybeanrelieved: enough. A small :marseyminipixel: fortune :marseyrabbitnewyear3: in dollars :marseycoin: is a large :marseyslimeteal: one in Yen.

Yes it is a terrible idea, holy shit you language learning people have actual zero understanding of what you're doing and for what purpose you're doing it.

If you learn a language, you learn one that is either culturally proximal to you or one that has utility in your current environment. You're a burger, the two languages that make sense to actually learn are spanish or french. If you frequently work with chinese or indians or whatever then it's that language you could learn, but instead you're delegating your time and effort into learning indian smoke signals. And no, watching anime in original language isn't a utility, and neither is the potential of maybe sometime moving to Japan. They won't let you emigrate simply because you happen to be able to string a couple of words together, which by the way will be the extent to which you learn that language because 10 minutes in you will realize that it's hard and has nothing in common with english and that you have neither the time nor dedication nor intelligence required to properly learn it.

I mean yeah that's why I was first considering Spanish or Chinese and not Japanese lol. And tbh if the US, idk, devolves into civil war I expect Japan would be at major risk of getting dabbed on by China. If that didn't happen then Japan would be at the top of my list of countries I would consider moving to alongside Singapore and South Korea. But yeah as of right now I'm probably just going to keep trying to learn Spanish. I'm watching some random Spanish politics youtube video right now tbh lol

Also what use does French have for a Burger??? lol Like I have worked with French people before but that's because I worked for a tech company with an office in France alongside a bunch of other countries.

I'll be honest that post was more of a :marseybaited: to get you to argue (which you ignored, so good for you) but from my understanding english, spanish and french are the only three official languages in the entirety of north america, with french being widely used in some regions of Canada, so surely it must occasionally come up?

I'm a burger not a leaf. Quebec has 0 relevance in my life. Idk if I have even ever met a French Canadian before. And tbh I didn't argue cuz I low-key agree with you. A lot of people I know are trying to learn Japanese but I think it's dumb because it's basically a useless language to know in terms of furthering your position in life. For a burger only Spanish really tends to have much benefit.

Learning Chinese doesn't give you much of an advantage in the US, unless you're looking to hit on Chinese college students.

I mean.... Not really. They had a brief surge with Hong Kong, but they killed it because Communists can't help themselves. They have major directors, and I've seen them all. It's very stifled because Communism, and cinematography-wise it's not really new.
