Art should be interesting before its beautiful. I'd take ugly and interesting over pretty and boring any day of the week.
For a renaissance example of this look at say, Hieronymus Bosch and his depiction of heck. Well made, but not beautiful. Go to a historical art museum where they hang his work and you'll walk past a hundred done up portraits of royals, immaculate still lives by famous masters and paintings of the crucifixion that no one gives a shit about on your way to his stuff.
Unfortunately the visual design of these characters is neither beautiful nor interesting. And in that case I'd rather have some beauty .
