Playing some zachtronics

I was really bored and low energy so I decided to do some chemistrypilled synthesismaxxing to unwind. I'm really happy I don't need to know anything about organic chemistry to enjoy this :marseycrayoneater:. Don't really have anything to add so here's a couple of solutions that I found to be interesting to look at (though not necessarily optimal).

@MayflyAlt-98 do you have little robots that move around hydrogen ions in your lab? I expect this game to be 100% true to life.

Most of them employ the trick of having essentially the same recipe duplicated twice but with different starting position of some arms so I save 1 cycle per molecule by not having to move the arms into the initial position

I enjoyed opus magnum and exapunks.

Gotta try this one.

These guys' games I always play for a couple hours and then I realize it's really close to being fun but somehow it's not. It's the strangest feeling. Like you're expecting to have fun but somehow it's not happening. Probably what women experience on a date with me.

The one where I understood it the most is where you're writing assembly language. I usually love programming puzzles so I thought I'd like that. It turns out that actually I really fricking hate assembly language. It's all of the not fun parts of programming put together.

To be fair to assembly language, TIS-100 is even more limited than regular assembly language. Which helps in the sense that you have way less confusing shit to worry about, but doesn't help in the sense that you need to jump through hoops to do a lot of stuff that wouldn't be that bad even in assembly.

It's probably more that I learned some things about myself. I realized that I don't like math. I get off on stuff like making really specialized UI controls that will save someone 0.3 seconds of their time when they have to click on it. I like getting into someone's head and figuring out how to help them. Assembly is just too abstract for me.

That's an extremely feminine thing to admit to and I probably need to transition. :marseysad:

I played TIS-100 twice, and then later I wrote actual assembly language and loved it, it was for school tho

How much caffeine/nicotine did you have in you when you played? For the assembly ones, it's better if you have text editor in another window for coding

Actually now that you mention it, playing these on adderall might be fricking awesome. :marseyhmm:

Molek syntez had a lot of style but ultimately was the easiest zach game. Best solitaire

This looks like my level of comfy.

It's pretty comfy because the puzzles themselves are pretty simple and only get hard if you yourself decide to optimize for something. It's opus magnum-level difficulty if you played that one.

I tried ShenzhenIO at some point and that one filtered me hard

Shenzhen is just assembly coding, felt more like homework than a game, never seen any other game require a manual to play

Is this a puzzle game, optimizer game, or both? I have never been able to get into optimizer games because they feel too similar to my actual job.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I guess both? Like I said in another comment, the puzzles are easy to complete but get hard if you decide to optimize, so the difficulty is self-imposed. It's like Opus Magnum in terms of difficulty if you ever played that one

I hated chemistry in school, but I do like some chemistry-themed games like Mercury Hg. I hadn't heard of this one before, but it definitely looks interesting. :marseynerd2:

Never heard of Mercury Hg so I'll note it for myself :marseynotes:

This one is just a programming game with a chemistry-themed coat of paint. The extent to which you have to know chemistry here is that atoms bind to other atoms

SpaceChem (also a Zachtronics game) is in my top 3 puzzle games ever for PC. I was completely obsessed with it. I played several others from the same developer, but none of them grabbed me as much as that one did.
