Haven't played SMT but I thought persona combat was pretty boring so I won't bother since it seems to be mostly just that.

Persona is heavily based on grinding and putting the square peg in the square hole. SMT is more complex and less grindy. Like its the only RPG ive played where stat buff/debuff spells actually matter alot.

Play Persona 2 innocent sin on psp and then persona 2 eternal punishment on psp. Persona games are all self contained 1 has no relation to 2 which has no relation to 3 ect. 1 and 2 dont have any dating sim elements and 2 is super fricking easy.
