It's an RPG, a pretty basic one with an extremely neurodivergent fanbase. But don't let their fans lead you astray, the only reason why people even play those games is because of the high school simulator. The early game is also extremely slow burn and story heavy, you will need to spend at least 30 minutes or an hour just to start the fun stuff.

Persona 5 always felt like a jrpg for people who don't like jrpgs.
Yeah its pretty with good music and decent dungeon design, but the actaully combat gameplay under the hood is like braindead easy, like legitimately some older pokemon games have more difficulty without challenge restrictions.
Anyways I put like 30 hours into it and just got bored of never being challenged, and despite it being a modern jrpg you couldn't adjust the difficulty in the middle of the game.

I recently replayed like half of P5R after playing P5 when it released and you have way too much time, and despite that they still buffed so many of the out of school activities. It makes it feel like a chore to complete all of it rather than choices with drawbacks and opportunity cost and the fear of an overbearing Morgana causing late return fees.
The way the new girl (isn't) integrated into the story beyond some cutscenes makes her feel like a modded character.
Dunno if I'd recommend P5 over P5R though.
