It is honestly kinda based how we can track progress by how tacky the cutting edge stuff from 5-10 years ago looks now.

You check out the Matrix Unreal Engine demo now and it actually looks a little aged and you can tell its not completely realistic at all.

It's this really cool human tendency where our mind fills in the blanks to make the newest CGI or game simulation with the best graphics look like real life butt when we something even better suddenly our brain has something to compare it against and realize that the last thing didn't look that real after all.

Same for food. You eat the first bite thats the most delicious bite, but the more you eat of it the more meh the flavor becomes until you take a few weeks to months off and give your tongue the time to "forget" the flavor and not meet any better flavor in the meantime.

I figure based on that we won't see photorealistic open worlds for another 20-30 years. Just things that look real until the next more real looking product becomes available.

MS was one of those early internet experiences you had to be there for. The days when everyone was chilling in Henesys and on that stupid fricking boat to Orbis instead of focusing on Exp/hr metagame sweat methods to max out characters you don't give a shit about.

Was a different era. A different life. It cannot be replicated.
