And marraige acts a a form of quality assurance. If another woman liked him enough to marry him then he's probably a good catch. Sort of like how rulers back in the day would sometimes seek out a single mom to marry because the fact she had a kid was proof if fertility.

If the guy was a an absolute monarch (and enough of a chad) he could just demand a divorce to make her available. Otherwise he'd have look for eligible, high status women who were already divorced or who's husband had passed away (which was a viable option because people died easier back then).

Depends on the time period and locale as well. The Catholic Church was not going to approve of a ruler demanding a divorce, and children born outside Chruch approved marriage would be illegitimate heirs. The ruler could send the husband off to die in some pointless war though.
