I recently directed a movie

I don't know if you guys remember the screenplay that I posted on /r/drama years ago, but I finally turned it into an actual film. I funded and directed it myself.

We're in the process of editing it right now and it should be totally completed at some point in November (or December at the very, very latest).

This entire process has been an emotional roller coaster and the stress has really started to get to me. Making this movie and, by extension, being a filmmaker is the only thing I've ever really wanted in life. I wrote this script (well, an earlier version of it) like 8 years ago when I was still in high school and I've sat on it that entire time while occasionally going back to it and making revisions. I didn't have the time, resources, and maturity needed to actually bring it to fruition until this year. I worked a soulless corporate job at a company run by sociopaths for almost five years so that I could save up money to finally accomplish this. This thing cost me $50,000. I didn't do a kickstarter or take out a loan or borrow from friends or family, this entirely came out of my own savings. I had never directed anything before and I knew that if I told anyone that I planned to spend that much making it, they would have told me it was a stupid idea....but this was a gamble I had to make. I had to take a risk on myself because if I didn't, I would just be one of the countless people that gave up on their dreams and I knew I would regret it for the rest of my life.

I think, overall, everything came out well. There were no major disasters in the production process, my actors all did a great job, and I think it will even be good from a visual standpoint instead of looking like a cheap indie movie (my cinematographer/camera man shot it on an Arri Alexa which is the same type of camera that major film studios use). But I have this constant sense of dread that everyone will hate it and that I'll never get to do this again. I don't even care about the money, I mentally wrote off the cost of the project, but I'm petrified that this project that I poured my heart and soul into and spent years of my life planning will be liked by no one and that people will think I'm a joke for making it.

When it's completed, I'll post a link here so you all can watch it. This movie will either be the start of my career or the end of it but at least I'll be able to go to sleep at night knowing that I tried.

This morning, Cum went to the park. I went with Coom. And Cum brought Coomer frisbee. At least I think it was Coomers. By the end of the day, Cum started throwing the frisbee to Cumself.

It takes major balls to follow your aspirations in the soulless globohomo world of today, especially if you're not rich. I hope you make it kang, :marseyking:

And if not, you'll have the comfort of knowing you are more self-aware than 99% of the NPCs sorrounding you.

This is awesome! Great job for even completing it. It's not easy to go through the whole process. But just so you know we will have your IMDB photo if you ever get distribution.

@MasterLawlz

Probably country club this thread and the one linking the movie, or don't do it at all. A black friend of mine almost got "cancelled" for trying to only hire white guys for his short film about racism, and that is nothing in comparison to what this site would do for any burgeoning career.

Also great job!!! :!marseyexcited: I will try to have a watch party with my lib friends! :!marseyjam:

Idk if people really care about directors though. Actors are the only ones that really get cancelled.

Plus I think the movie is relatively progressive.

i would chime in if you were to make a george floyd biopic with a white actor. full on acab/blm pretentious but the actor is white and no one notices it. sadly πŸ˜” would never happen

What were the most interesting and challenging parts of the writing process. How much did the script change from start to end

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I would say the main way it changed is that the time it took to introduce the female lead got shortened because her character is what really jumpstarted the story and made it interesting

I also altered the beginning and ending

Good on ya, you don’t have to answer to nobody if it flops but don’t have to share the success if it trends. That’s a DARN GOOD setup to have, congrats on it all and on getting through shooting. I’m sure we’ll organize some events once its out to promote it and try to get it on netflix or some shit.

I wonder how much joel harver spent making his indie films now.

I don't know how much Alexas rent for, but you have one and semi-professional actors and at least one crewmember for 50k? Did you film it in a week or is it just that short a film? Of course single-location is the urexample of student filmmakers so I also want to see this set. I'm past my indie arthouse kino phase but I'd give it a shot for fun.

Alexa Classic bodies sell for like 5k these days, lots of camera operators who own one.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

That's not as bad as I thought, I was thinking you were still looking at like 15k for a cheap kit but they would be getting older for digital cameras now.

My camera guy owned his own Alexa. That helped us a lot. It's honestly amazing that we shot the whole thing with it because the filming location was maybe 500 ish square feet and Alexa cameras are pretty enormous.

We had a pretty big cast and crew of like 10-12 people in total I think. It was definitely a full film crew and we were constantly bumping into each other because the location was so small. I shot it in an AirBNB (I was very fortunate to get the owners' permission) and we rented a second unit to use as a base of operations/break room.

We shot it in 10 days and the final runtime will end up being a little over 2 hours. So it's definitely a full movie, not even a really short one. But it's so dialogue-heavy that there are some days where we filmed like 10 pages of the script in 12 hours.

Nah, I genuinely don't see the point in short films. The only difference between a feature and a short is that a short has a 0% chance of making money and a 0.01% chance of starting a career.

I don't know, The Strange Thing About the Johnsons turned out well for Ari Aster.

Yeah, but for every situation like that, there are probably like a thousand examples where a short film was pointless to make.
