I have some theories about what can cause this redditor behavior:
There were some comments screeching about this, but the
went to work their highly profitable job, so these comments are now removed.
There is some sperging about this elsewhere outside of Reddit, like on Twitter, so they criticize the chuds from their reddit safe space, without the fear of having to confront people with different opinions.
Redditors just feel the need to religiously signalize to the public that they are part of the chosen elect, and that they harbor no sinful thoughts, they need to show total support to an idea that their semi-religious worldview stands for, even if there is absolutely no one going against it.

I've definitely seen one and two happen, and third one also happens, I'm sure you've encountered the "ew I bet this comment section is gonna be disgusting! frick who/whatever bad should be happening" comments at some point.
In one of the few subs I bother visiting, jannies semi implemented (they're not super consistent in applying it) a policy that threads about controversial subjects will get locked. Not because they don't want to spend time cleaning them up. Not because y'all can't behave. Apparently "some members felt unwelcome" that there might be 2-3 comments saying something they don't like, usually heavily downmarseyd so they specifically have to scroll down and look for them, thus jannies want to prevent from these comments being posted in the first place by locking threads early
