How can anyone ever believe a single thing journ*lists write? How did the state of journ*lism fall to the point where they are routinely pranked by their own laziness and inability to fact check?

In a speech in 2002, Crichton coined the term Gell-Mann amnesia effect, after physicist Murray Gell-Mann. He used this term to describe the phenomenon of experts believing news articles on topics outside of their fields of expertise, even after acknowledging that articles written in the same publication that are within the experts' fields of expertise are error-ridden and full of misunderstanding:[140]

Media carries with it a credibility that is totally undeserved. You have all experienced this. …

Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. … You read the article and see the journ*list has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. …

You read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know. …

In ordinary life, if somebody consistently exaggerates or lies to you, you soon discount everything they say. … But when it comes to the media, we believe against evidence that it is probably worth our time to read other parts of the paper. … The only possible explanation for our behavior is amnesia.

Psychology is so riddled with narcisism.

Why call it Gell-Mann when you could call it "read and believe"?

Murray Gell-Mann wasn't a psychologist, he was a physicist, and quite an accomplished one at that. The phrase Gell-Man amnesia effect was coined by Michael Crichton (the guy who wrote Jurassic Park), who also wasn't a psychologist.

Don't know, dude. I'm too drunk. It's not a social science, he was doing a comical observation. A one that fits with a LIVING EXPERIENCE of anyone who has mastery of any subject and ever bothered to open a newspaper or read a website. If journos are too r-slurred to grasp things you know, why assume they grasp things you only know in passing?

Academia is so riddled with narcisism. You're correct, but it goes much farther afield.
